I love how the British go on about "the north." The whole country is the size of some American SUVs.
Scott - The United Kingdom is one of those countries wherein walking ten miles in a given direction may introduce you to another dialect of the English language or subculture of British society. We speak of the North of England as a different place, because it is, in a very real sense, to be differentiated from the South. Similarly, the people of Wales or Scotland would not appreciate being thought of as 'the same' as England.
This lack of homogenisation is the sort of thing you find in a country that's been around for more than a handful of centuries.
